Afzal Khan, seen here with Whalley Range Labour members and supporters, has been elected as our new Member of Parliament with an overwhelming majority. He says “There is no doubt that the country faces some difficult times ahead – problems which are entirely the making of the Conservative Party and Theresa May. With my fellow Labour MPs, under the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, we will provide a strong Opposition and start preparing for a future Labour government. Thank you to everyone who supported me.”
The votes cast for each candidate here in Whalley Range (on a turnout of 76.4%) were: Continue reading
GE 2017
Today is polling day – vote for Afzal Khan
Polls are open now until 10pm. As well as Afzal, good luck to all our Labour candidates and campaigners in and around Manchester and across the country. For more information about how to vote, see the previous post.
General election on Thursday 8 June
Thursday 8th June is polling day in the general election of all UK Members of Parliament, including our own constituency of Manchester Gorton – please support the Labour Party. A vote for Afzal Khan is a vote for the Many, not the Few, and a vote against the divisive and bankrupt policies of Theresa May’s government. Four things to remember:
- You don’t need your polling card to vote – just go to your polling station and give them your name and address
- Polls are open from 7am to 10pm – if you’re going to be busy late on, why not vote first thing?
- If you’ve got a postal vote, but haven’t sent it back yet, you can take it to any polling station before 10pm
- If you don’t know where your polling station is or you need a lift to vote, call the Whalley Range Labour team on 0161 860 5523, or Afzal Khan’s campaign hotline on 07405 646632.
Mayoral election (but no by-election) next Thursday
As a result of the government calling a General Election for Thursday 8 June, the parliamentary by-election for the vacant seat of Manchester Gorton has been cancelled. The seat will of course be contested as part of the General Election, with Afzal Khan standing for the Labour Party.
But the GMCA Mayoral election is taking place this coming Thursday 4 May, with Andy Burnham as the Labour Party candidate. Many people are (quite understandably) confused about election dates following the government announcement, so it’s very important to remind your (Labour supporting!) friends, work colleagues, family and neighbours that this election is still happening, and that they need to turn out and vote. Postal voters will already have received their voting packs and should complete and return them as soon as possible.
