Election 2021 – Bano wins for Labour in Whalley Range

Following the election yesterday and the count today at Manchester Convention Centre which concluded at 6.30pm, Muqaddasah Bano has been declared the new councillor for Whalley Range. The final tally of votes on a turnout of 34.8% is as follows:

BANO, MuqaddasahLabour2,733
MCGUINESS, AndrewLiberal Democrat102
MCMANUS, BethGreen955
TANG, AndrewConservative210

Bano says “I am really honoured to have been chosen by the residents of Whalley Range to represent them on the Council. Of course I have much to learn as a new councillor, but I will work really hard to repay the faith you have put in me. And of course thanks also to Mary Watson, who has served as councillor here for fifteen years and is so well respected in the community. I will do my best to follow in her footsteps”.

Postal voters – you can return your ballots straight away

Electors in Whalley Range ward who chose to vote by post have started to receive their voting packs from this morning, although some (especially those who have registered quite recently) may not receive their pack until next week. The pack contains two ballot papers this year and you can vote for Labour candidates on both of them – Muqaddasah Bano as councillor for Whalley Range ward, and Andy Burnham as Mayor of Greater Manchester.

Bano says “You can complete and return your ballot papers straight away – you don’t have to wait for May 6th. I hope you will vote for me and Andy, but whoever you choose to support, please don’t forget to return your postal vote”.

Go Postal – apply to vote early this year

Mary, Bano and Angeliki have all gone postal

The government has reconfirmed that the local election postponed from last year will take place on Thursday 6 May. While electors can be confident that voting on the day at polling stations will be completely safe, it may be less convenient than usual – for example, some polling stations may have to temporarily relocate (especially those normally in schools), and voters may have to queue outside at busier times.

So if you haven’t already, why not Go Postal this year? You can easily apply to vote early by post online – follow this link to find out more on the Manchester City Council and download the form. After completing and signing the form, you can submit it by email with either a scan or a clear, legible photo of the completed form attached.

Muqaddasah Bano, Labour candidate for Whalley Range, says “I usually vote at my local polling station, but this year is different – I’m going postal. It only took a couple of minutes to apply, it was quite a simple form.”

Today is Election Day – vote Labour for a better future

This is the most important election that many of us can remember. Every vote counts – don’t waste the chance to have your say. Four things to remember:

  • You don’t need your polling card to vote – just go to your polling station and give them your name and address
  • Polls are open until 10pm
  • If you’ve got a postal vote but haven’t sent it back yet, you can complete the voting pack and take the sealed envelope to any polling station in Manchester before 10pm
  • If you don’t know where your polling station is or you need a lift to vote, visit our polling station finder.

General Election 2019 – make sure you can vote

As you will certainly know by now, a general election will take place in the UK on Thursday 12 December.

While Labour supporters will embrace the opportunity to ditch a failed Tory government and hopefully put Labour back in power, the timing of the election will bring problems – short daylight hours, cold weather (or worse), winter break holidays, the distraction of the pre-Christmas season and (for students) the ending of university term may all conspire to lower the turnout. So please make sure that you and everyone you know who backs Labour will be able to use your votes – feel free to pass on this information to anyone you know who might need it:
