Celebrating compassion at St Margaret’s Primary School

On a bright Friday afternoon, Whalley Range Councillors, Mayor Andy Burnham, and local MP Afzal Khan joined pupils, staff, families, and faith leaders at St Margaret’s C of E Primary School in Whalley Range for a heartwarming celebration centred on compassion — one of the school’s core values.

The event showcased the inspiring work of children who have been exploring what compassion means across different faiths, in their local community, and as global citizens. Through artwork, presentations, and conversations, pupils shared how compassion can be practiced in everyday life — from small acts of kindness at home and school, to caring for the planet and volunteering to help others.

As part of their journey, children learned from local faith leaders and charities, heard stories of service and empathy, and reflected on their role in building a more caring world.

Following the event, Cllr Angeliki Stogia said: “Compassion lies at the heart of every community — and here in Whalley Range, we are lucky to live in one of the most diverse wards in Manchester, where people get along, look after each other, and truly embody those values. For me, compassion as a Councillor means listening without judgement, leading with kindness, and creating an environment where everyone feels listened to, valued and respected. Listening to the children of St Margaret’s speak so openly about kindness, care and responsibility was both inspiring and humbling. Seeing these values nurtured in our schools gives me real hope for the future of our community. Thank you to everyone involved in making this event a success.”

The event was open to all, reinforcing the school’s commitment to inclusivity and community spirit. Parents, neighbours, and guests joined together to celebrate the children’s achievements and reflect on how we can all play a part in creating a kinder, more connected society.

The afternoon was a powerful reminder that compassion isn’t just a value we teach — it’s something we live, together, every day.
