Local community groups and Council services work tirelessly to keep our streets clean, but despite their efforts, fly-tipping remains a persistent issue in parts of Whalley Range and Moss Side. From litter dumped by those who don’t live in the area, to rogue landlords and some businesses not disposing waste correctly, residents have told us loud and clear: they want more action. And that’s exactly what we are delivering.
This spring, we are stepping up the fight to clean the alleyways off Claremont Road. A targeted campaign is bringing together Council teams, local residents, and businesses to tackle fly-tipping head-on. The focus will not only be on cleaning up the area but also on educating and working with the community to prevent further waste dumping.
Councillor Aftab Razaq, said: “Enough is enough. Our streets and alleyways should not be used as dumping grounds. The majority of residents take great pride in their neighbourhood, and they deserve clean and safe streets. That’s why we are taking direct action to tackle fly-tipping, and we will work with local people to make a lasting difference.”

Councillor Angeliki Stogia added: “Fly-tipping is not just an eyesore—it’s a serious problem that impacts public health, attracts vermin, and makes life harder for residents who care about their environment. We are determined to crack down on illegal dumping, work with businesses to ensure they dispose of their waste properly, and take enforcement action where necessary.”
The Council’s enforcement team will be carrying out increased inspections, targeting repeat offenders, and ensuring waste is disposed of responsibly. The support of local residents is crucial—if you witness fly-tipping, report it so action can be taken (you can use this form to report it online). Together, we can make a real difference and reclaim our streets.
