New plans for Spire hospital site on Russell Road

The Council has acquired the old Spire Hospital site on Russell Road, and plans are now underway for the UK’s first ever Extra Care scheme designed for older LGBT people.

Cllr Angeliki Stogia says “Whalley Range has been chosen for this exciting scheme of 77 homes because of its vibrant and diverse community, and good local amenities. Many Whalley Range residents identify as LGBT, and the number of older people is expected to rise significantly in coming years. Although targeted at LGBT people, the new facilities will be open to all.”

Half of the Extra Care homes will be available at an affordable rent, with the remainder for sale. Residents will be supported on site by well-trained and experienced staff. Pets will also be welcome at the scheme, and it is hoped that the plans will include a cafe open to the public.

In addition, there will be a development of approximately 12 new family homes for sale, along Russell Road. More information about the plans can be found on the Council website here.
