Latest 20mph speed limit proposals – have your say

Major resurfacing work on Withington Road is currently in progress

Addressing concerns raised by many local people over the last year, the three Whalley Range councillors have requested that Withington Road and Alexandra Road South are considered for inclusion in the next round of roads to be designated with a 20mph speed limit.

Councillor Angeliki Stogia says “These roads are predominantly residential but also serve local shops, schools, religious facilities and of course Alexandra Park, and are well used by cyclists and crossed by many pedestrians. We need to do everything we can to encourage safe driving”.

Part of Withington Road is already a 20mph zone, but these proposals would see the scheme extended to the full length of the road – see here for a plan. If you would like more information or to make any comments, please get in touch with any of the Councillors before June 22nd.

Withington Rd to be resurfaced this June

Angeliki checks the state of some of the existing potholes before work starts

The surface of Withington Road between Manley Road and the old Whalley pub has been in poor condition for some time, with a number of potholes making things difficult for drivers and creating dangers for cyclists. But as part of the £100m highways investment programme by the City Council, this section of the road is now going to be fully resurfaced, with work starting on Thursday 4 June.

Cllr Angeliki Stogia says “Aftab, Mary and I know that local residents have had concerns about the condition of this road, and we’ve been pushing for this work to be prioritised. We’re really pleased that it will soon be underway.”

GM bus consultation – our councillors’ response

The public consultation on proposals by Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to bring the region’s bus services back under public control has now closed. The three Whalley Range councillors (Angeliki Stogia, Mary Watson and Aftab Razaq) are all strongly in favour of the plans – you can read their submission to the consultation here.

Whalley Range Labour candidate Assia Shah says “Angeliki, Mary, Aftab and I will continue to push for the improvements we all need to our public transport infrastructure, including better buses. We’re looking forward to hearing about the outcome of the consultation and the next steps in this process”.

Buses for people not profit – have your say now

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority have published their proposals to change the way our buses are run, putting the needs of the public ahead of the bus companies’ wish to maximise their profits. As part of this process, they have launched a formal consultation open to everyone.

Assia Shah, who will be Whalley Range Labour’s candidate in 2020, says “The big bus companies will be fighting back and lobbying hard, so it’s vital that the rest of us make our views known if this change is to become a reality. Even if you’re not a regular bus user at present, a ‘London style’ bus franchising system can bring many environmental and social benefits for the whole population – including reduced traffic congestion”.

Chorlton to city centre cycle route – how to have your say

As posted in January, a major new cycling (and walking) route from Chorlton Park to the city centre is planned which will run the full length of Upper Chorlton Road. Preliminary designs for the new £13.4m scheme have been prepared, and Manchester City Council are inviting all local residents to consult with them about the proposals. Full details are on the council website, and the consultation will close in mid-January 2019.

As well as leaving comments online, you can attend one of four drop-in events which are being held at locations close to the route. The event nearest to the Whalley Range section is happening on Wednesday 25th November from 3.15-7pm at Limelight, 1 St Brides Way, M16 9NW (just along Shrewsbury Street from the old Whalley pub).
